Childhood Apraxia of Speech or Developmental Dyspraxia

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (“CAS”) or Developmental Dyspraxia makes it difficult for children to speak or say what they want to.  CAS or Developmental Dyspraxia is a motor speech disorder in which the child has difficulty coordinating oral movements in order to produce sounds, words or phrases.  Articulation errors are highly inconsistent and frequent.

SYMPTOMS

  • Slow, effortful speech
  • Prolongation of speech sounds
  • Repetitions of sounds and syllables
  • More frequent occurrence of deleting and substituting sounds
  • Unusual articulation errors
  • Inconsistent articulation errors
  • Difficulty with volitional, oral and nonspeech movements
  • Groping and silent posturing of the articulators (struggling movements)

HOW WE CAN HELP

  • Treatment for Childhood of Apraxia Speech or Developmental Dyspraxia requires a progressive hierarchical approach from easy to difficult tasks. It involves intensive therapy including extensive drills stressing sequences of movement involved in speech production, imitation, decrease rate of speech, normal prosody and increased accuracy in the production of individual consonants, vowels and consonant clusters.
  • At Q Enrichment Center, our Speech, Language and Swallowing Pathologist will conduct an extensive comprehensive assessment to determine the type of difficulty, the severity, as well as the diagnosis. A detailed report will be completed along with a treatment plan specific to each individual’s needs.
